I. ArcView 9.1 Evaluation Software
Q. If I have a full version of ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo installed, can I install the ArcView 9.1 evaluation edition?
A. No, do not install the ArcView 9.1 evaluation edition if you already have a full version of ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo 8.x or higher installed.
Q. If I am currently running ArcView 3.x, can I install the ArcView 9.1 evaluation edition?
A. Yes, you can run both ArcView 3.x and ArcView 9.1 simultaneously. You do not need to uninstall ArcView 3.x before installing ArcView 9.1.
Q. Can I extend my evaluation of ArcView 9.1?
A. No, it is not possible to extend the evaluation period nor reinstall the evaluation software on your computer once it has timed out.
Q. Do I need to register the software before I can use it?
A. Yes, you need to register ArcView 9.1 and each of the extensions you wish to evaluate with ESRI before you can begin using any of them. You can register via the Internet, ESRI web site, e-mail, fax or mail.
Q. Where do I find the registration number for the ArcView 9.1 evaluation edition?
A. If you are using the 60 day ArcView 9.1 evaluation CD, the 12-digit registration number is located on the inside of the CD sleeve. If you are using an evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1 that was provided with an ESRI Press workbook or ESRI Virtual Campus course, the registration number is located on the sticker attached to the front of the CD sleeve.
Q. What is the difference between a registration number and an authorization file?
A. The registration number is the 12-digit code located on the CD sleeve. When you are ready to register, you will provide ESRI with that registration number, and we will in turn give you an authorization file so that you can activate ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS extensions. If you register via the Internet, this process happens automatically.
Q. When does my evaluation period of ArcView 9.1 begin?
A. The evaluation period begins once you have initiated the registration process and ESRI issues an authorization file. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered it, your evaluation time has not begun.
Q. How can I see when the evaluation software expires?
A. Use the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator. From the Start menu, select Programs, select ArcGIS, click Desktop Administrator. Click on the Availability folder.
Q. I have just completed registering software using the e-mail option. Why doesn't the Desktop Administrator reflect the recent change?
A. The Desktop Administrator doesn't refresh until you click OK. Click OK and then restart the Desktop Administrator.
Q. If I install a full version of ArcView 9.1, do I need to uninstall the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1? Can I use the registration number from the full version with the evaluation version software?
A. If you install a full version of ArcView 9.1, you must uninstall the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS extensions and then install the full version of ArcView 9.1. The registration number for the full version of ArcView 9.1 will not work with the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1.
Q. How can I uninstall the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1?
A. Use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows control panel. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select "ArcView 9.1 (Demo Edition)" from the program list. If you are using Windows NT, click the Add/Remove button. This will uninstall ArcView 9.1.
Q. The install guide installed with the software mentions three CDs. Am I missing something?
A. The install guide installed with the software refers to the full version of ArcView 9.1. The full version of ArcView 9.1 provides three CDs which includes Sample Maps, that are not included with the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1.
Q. I cannot locate ArcView in my programs menu. What happened?
A. When you install ArcView 9.1, you are installing the ArcGIS Desktop applications–ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcGIS is the name that appears in the Start program menu, not ArcView.
Q. What are ArcMap and ArcCatalog?
A. ArcView 9.1 consists of two desktop applications: ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcMap provides data display, query, and analysis. ArcCatalog provides data management. When you want to begin using ArcView, you need to open each of these applications (Start>Programs> ArcGIS> then choose ArcMap and ArcCatalog). Once open, each application window reads ArcMap–ArcView; ArcCatalog–ArcView.
Q. What is ArcReader?
A. ArcReader is a free, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files (PMFs). ArcGIS Publisher is an extension to ArcView, that converts map documents (MXD) to published map files (PMF). For more information on ArcReader, visit www.esri.com/arcreader.
Q. Is there any functionality disabled in the ArcView 9.1 evaluation edition compared to the full version of ArcView 9.1?
A. No, the evaluation edition is the same as the full version of ArcView 9.1.
II. ArcGIS Extension Evaluation Software
Q. Do the ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.1?
A. Yes, the ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.1. They are called the ArcGIS extensions since they work with ArcView 9.1, ArcEditor 9.1, and ArcInfo 9.1, collectively known as the ArcGIS Desktop Products.
Q. Which ArcGIS extensions are available to evaluate on this CD?
A. ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS Network Analyst, ArcGIS 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Schematics, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS Data Interoperability, ArcGIS Publisher, ArcGIS Survey Analyst, ArcScan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Tracking Analyst and Maplex for ArcGIS are all available for evaluation.
Q. How long do I have to evaluate the ArcGIS extensions that operate with ArcView 9.1?
A. The registration period of the extensions match the registration period of the core software. When the core software times out, so will the the extensions.
Q. Can I extend my evaluation of the ArcGIS extensions?
A. No, it is not possible to extend the evaluation period or reinstall the evaluation software on your computer once it has timed out.

Q. Where do I find the registration numbers for each of the ArcGIS extensions?
A. When evaluating the ArcGIS extensions, you are not required to enter the registration numbers. During the registration process at the Evaluate the ArcGIS extensions panel, check the boxes next to the extensions you would like to evaluate. The registration wizard will recognize the same registration number you used for registering ArcView 9.1.
Q. How can I evaluate the ArcGIS extensions?
A. When you begin the registration process for ArcView 9.1, you will be prompted as to whether or not you would like to register the ArcGIS extensions. You can then select the extensions you would like to try, or you can choose to register an extension at a later date.
Q. If I did not install the ArcGIS extensions during my initial installation of ArcView 9.1, how can I go back and install them?
A. If you did not choose to install the ArcGIS extensions during the initial installation of ArcView 9.1, they can be added later. We recommend that you install and register the ArcGIS extensions at the same time as ArcView 9.1.

Q. What operating systems are supported for the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1?
A. The evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1 and the full version of ArcView 9.1 support Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. For more information, visit www.esri.com/arcview.
Q. What are recommended hardware requirements to run the evaluation edition of ArcView 9.1?
A. The recommended requirements are a Pentium computer with a 1.0 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and approximately 1000 MB of free disk space.
Please note: Disk space does not include the 50 MB of system drive space needed for installation (typically C:\WINNT\system32). The disk space requirement for each of the ArcView 9.1 components is provided in the setup program.
