Each roadway was digitized using Intergraph software from USGS mylar quad sheets using the UTM 17 NAD27 coordinates for the quad corners to register the digitizer. The intergraph DGN file was imported to GDS where it is currently maintained. Maintenance includes additions, modifications, and deletions of roads and intersections (nodes). The LRS coverage is maintained in UTM 17 projection NAD 27 datum at this time. A list of roadways and the coordinates of their vertices was generated into an ARC/INFO coverage. Route attributions were added to the coverage to take advantage of dynamic segmentation. An ARC/INFO export file is the current distribution format. MODIFICATIONS TO THE BASEMAP In addition to the regular updates to the basemap, two major modifications to the basemap are currently underway: 1. Addition of graphics for both travel directions (to replace a single centerline) for interstates and turnpikes (toll roads). This modification eliminated single lines for interstates and turnpikes and replaced them with a line for each direction. (This data is also referred to as dual-aligned roads.) Ramps for interchanges were also added. This process is expected to be completed by January 2000. 2. Addition of conflated county road data from local sources. The process of conflation involves the adjustment of the basemap with the roads acquired from local government sources. These roads, when available, will replace existing basemap roads if it is determined that they are more positionally accurate. Local roads are also being acquired and will be maintained as a separate data set. This process is ongoing, and modifications to the basemap will be made as conflated data becomes available. The LRS coverage has attribution in several INFO files which can be related to Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI) data with the 'roadway' item. RCI data may be accessed for each arc or route with the 'roadway' item. In the case of overlapping routes, the primary route, by which RCI data is referenced for sections with multiple routes, is the route identified by the arc file 'roadway' item, not the route file 'roadway' item. The ARC/INFO export file is downloaded from DOT's FTP site and the basemap coverage is converted to DEP's Albers projection. To provide useful road segment name attributes to DEP's GIS users, the following RCI dynamic segmentation INFO files are applied to the basemap coverage in ArcView 3.1 as event themes: localnam, stroute, usroute, bridgeno, and tollroad. The results are converted to shapefiles which are then inserted into Spatial Database Engine (SDE 3.0.2).
