sediment was rinsed through a series of sieves and proportions of sample remaining in the sieves were used to estimate the percent composition of shell (mollusc shell or rock fragments retained by a No. 4 sieve), sand (shell and rock particles passing through a No. 4 sieve and retained on a No. 200 sieve), and mud (silt and clay particles passing through a No. 200 sieve). The sediment sample was also inspected for the presernce of floral (seagrasses and macroalgae) and faunal assemblages (sessile invertebrates such as oysters, tunicates, sponges, bryozoans, and polychaete worm tubes).</attraccr></attracc><posacc><horizpa><horizpar>Geographic coordinates for sampling locations were defined prior to sampling. Aerial photographs (1999 DOQQ) were used to digitize the shoreline boundary of Estero Bay and coordinates for the systematic array of sampling points were calculated within the boundary. Benthic samples were collected within 10 m of the predetermined sample site coordinates using a GPS with WAAS corrections.
