Planning for the state's growth is affected by the private interests of those who are in the business of building more shopping, homes and industry. I feel there should be an end to their influence. The only way that will happen is if all of the legislature is voted out of office at once. Since that won't happen, I guess the state is doomed to over development. I have no confidence that the legislature would make any decisions that would be in the state's interest, since all of the money for their reelection is located in doing what is not in the state's interest. Having said that, I will get on to the point of my letter. It is another plea from the people who are affected by one of those contributors to the state reelection coffers, Progress Energy and their planned new nuclear power plant. I don't feel we should allow the growth they are planning for and I don't think that nuclear power is cost effective. It seems like a "done deal" though; so I will complain about the slow permitting process. Our community of 2800 lots, located in Brookridge of Brooksville, Florida, is being held hostage to that process. They can't sell a home because they are required to inform new buyers of the Progress Energy letter they received stating their home is near the proposed widening of the corridor. Prospective home buyers are turned away by this disclosure. Some people who just put in new homes are worried about an upside down mortgage occurrence if they have to sell it soon. Others are poised to remodel; but feel they don't want to sink money into a home, if at some future date it could be taken away from them. Still others, who are in their last years on earth, desperately wanting to age in place, find the prospect of moving physically and mentally challenging. Besides providing electricity to its customers, Progress Energy spokeswoman said it sells a large part of its energy to other electric companies. Should eminent domain laws allow business to expand so they can make more profit at the expense of private property rights? It doesn't matter to you; so I am going to tell you what I think anyway. Eminent domain take over by any entity should be against the law. It has allowed the over development we have today; with new shopping centers and home developments with unsold properties. Nuclear is not the way to go, especially in a flood plain in Florida. The nuclear plant they already have probably doesn't have a plan for how they will get rid of the plant when it is dismantled. They sure don't have a good plan for storing the waste, not in my estimation anyway. It is frustrating that the people have no say in this process that makes no sense at all!!!!
