Tip

The disk space requirements for each of the installation components is provided in the Setup program.

Some features of ArcView, such as ArcCatalog metadata, thumbnail views, the ArcMap Visual Basic Editor and internet map services features (see the Using ArcCatalog book for more information about these features), require Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher.

If your computer does not include Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher, the ArcView setup will notify you of the missing requirement and exit. You must obtain and install Internet Explorer, then run the ArcGIS Desktop setup again.

For additional and recommended requirements, see the ArcGIS 9.1 system requirements at http://support.esri.com.

ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing requirements

ArcGIS Desktop geoprocessing tools require that Python and the Python Win32 extension are installed. If the ArcGIS Desktop setup does not find Python or the Pyton Win32 extension installed on the target computer, it will install Python 2.1 and Win32all-151 extension during a typical or complete installation. You may choose a Custom installation to unselect the Python feature to avoid installing these features. Additionally, if the Python setup is executed during ArcGIS Desktop's installation, you will be provided with the opportunity to choose its installation location. The Python installation location can not include spaces.

You may visit the Python download site to install any version of Python and its corresponding Win32 extension prior to installing ArcGIS Desktop to meet this requirement.  See Python requirement for more information.

For more information about Python and win32 extension, see their respective web pages:
