A GEOLOGICAL & GEOPHYSICAL SITE SURVEY
OF DEADMAN'S ISLAND AND OLD NAVY COVE
AT GULF BREEZE, FLORIDA

Figure 1 - Map of the Study Area

Figure 1 shows an overview of the Study Area as well as sample locations.  The ArcMap Project and ArcPublisher Project are both interactive maps which contain links to web pages and PDF files of vibracores, hammer cores, and island sediments residing on this DVD (please see below). Within the ArcMap Project, labels are scaled for a proper size for the printed layout. Therefore, they will appear too small to read on the layout view when zoomed to the full map extent. Opening the proper data view will make them readable.  Issues may also arise from trying to use the hyperlink tool in the Layout View.  Please refer to the information below on the subject.  Before opening the map please read the disclaimer .

Tip:
On the ArcMap project, if an icon is shown in grey then it is not linked.

There are three ways to view Figure 1:

Note that in order to open any of the linked PDF files, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your machine.

ArcMap Information

The ArcMap Project contains two data frames:

  1. "Deadman's Island"

This data frame is in Geographic NAD83 projection; however, the DOQQ Aerial Imagery are in FDEP Albers.  The scale of this data frame in the Layout View is 1:3,600.

  2. "Location Map"

This data frame is in Geographic NAD83 projection. The scale of this data frame in the Layout View is 1:250,000.

The first is the main data frame.  It contains the following data:

  1. FGS Vibracores

Contains data associated with vibracores taken by FGS on and off of Deadman's Island.

  2. FGS Hammer Cores

Contains data associated with hammer cores taken by FGS off of Deadman's Island.

  3. FGS Island Sediments

Contains data associated with surficial island sediments taken by FGS on Deadman's Island.

  4. FGS Bottom Samples

Contains data associated with seabed bottom samples taken by FGS off of Deadman's Island.

  5. GPR Transects

Path Data of Ground Penetrating Radar collected in 2007.

  6. Escambia & Santa Rosa Co.

This dataset contains polygons for Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties in Florida.

  7. Bathymetry

This dataset contains contour lines for offshore bathymetry at 5 foot intervals.

  8. Aerial - Gulf Breeze NW

DOQQ Aerial Image from 2004 for NW Quarter of Gulf Breeze Quad

  9. Aerial - Gulf Breeze NE

DOQQ Aerial Image from 2004 for NE Quarter of Gulf Breeze Quad

Hyperlink Information:

Both the ArcMap and the ArcReader Projects include a number of hyperlinks to access the information on this disk. To access a feature's hyperlink, please follow the following directions:

1. Activate the desired Data Frame by either clicking on it in the layout, or right-click the data frame title in the table of contents and click Activate.

2. Open the Data View of the Activated Data Frame under the View menu.

3. Make sure the layer containing the feature for which you want to access a hyperlink is checked on (visible) in the table of contents.

4. Click the Hyperlink tool (the tool looks like a thunderbolt). Any visible features in the map that have hyperlinks defined are drawn in blue or outlined in blue in the case of polygons. When you are over a feature for which a hyperlink exists, the mouse pointer turns into a pointing hand and you see a popup tip with the name of the target.

5. Click the feature. A hyperlink is invoked. If more than one hyperlink has been defined for the feature you clicked, a dialog will appear from which you can select the hyperlink you want to launch. Please note that you may need to zoom to the core or sample first.

If a "Hyperlinks" menu pops up, double click on the desired hyperlink to open it. If this does not work try zooming into the feature of interest and try the hyperlink again. For further information, please refer to the ArcGIS Help under the Help menu.
