The ArcView setup allows you to choose a predetermined set of installation features (typical or complete) or to choose only the specific features required for your installation (custom).
Ensure that a TEMP variable is set to a valid folder where you have write access and space available.
Close all applications on your computer.
Verify that your computer meets the system requirements.
Close all applications on your computer. Because ArcView installs system files that might be shared with other applications, you should shut down all other applications (including anti-virus software) before installing ArcView.
Insert the ArcView CD to automatically launch the startup dialog box.

The ArcView startup dialog box presents the ability to install the applications locally on your machine or to a network server location, allowing many users to install the software from the central network location. The network installation does not provide the ability to run the software from a network location.
To install ArcView on your computer for your use only, choose the first installation option, Install ArcGIS Desktop.
The ArcView setup program includes the ability to install the optional ArcGIS extensions and installation components. To install optional components including the extensions, choose the complete or custom installation type. 'Complete' installs all installation components, while 'custom' allows you to choose specific extensions and installation components.
You can add or remove components after installing. See Adding ArcView installation components for more information.
If Python will be installed with ArcView, a dialog box will be displayed allowing you to choose the Python installation location. The python location defaults to C:\python21, this installation location should not include spaces. See python requirements for more information.
In addition to the python installation location, you must select or accept the installation for ArcView. If ArcView is the first ArcGIS product installed, a dialog box for the installation location will be displayed.
When all installation components are installed, the setup will provide the option to register ArcView. ArcView (Single Use) must be registered prior to use.
You can complete the registration process during the ArcView installation or register the software later.
After the ArcGIS installation completes, the setup program provides you with the opportunity to install the optional installation components.
The setup program also allows you to optionally install the ArcGIS Tutorial Data. If you choose to install it, you will be prompted for the appropriate CD.
If you choose to install one or more of these options, separate installations for the selected components will automatically start.
